Vickers, Frank T

Private Frank Thomas Vickers; 51472 Lancashire Fusiliers

Awarded Victory & British War Medals

Born 18th November 1898, in Willaston, Cheshire but unsure of his mother’s name.  His father was possibly Thomas H Vickers* (see census details)

Frank was baptised in Hanmer 25th June 1899.
He started Hanmer school 21st Sept 1903, but due to ill health in January 1904, he was absent from school for three months & was readmitted in the April. Strangely, the school records the name of his parent/guardian as Edward Vickers, but nowhere have I come across an Edward.

  • 1901 Both Frank and Thomas H Vickers are living with Richard & Mary Thomas and their daughter Emma Anne Thomas in Horseman’s Green. Thomas is described as a widower and boarder.
  • 1911, Frank is living with Emma Anne Thomas in Willington, Hanmer – relationship recorded as “adopted child”.

He married Jane Mullock of Bradeley Dec qtr 1937, West Cheshire district and in 1939 they are at Wyen Wenn Farm where Frank is a Dairy Farmer. This confirms date of birth as 18th November 1898….same date as on Hanmer school records.

He died 17th December 1957 and is buried in Hanmer Churchyard.

His funeral report from the Whitchurch Herald provides more information:

*I have checked census records for his father Thomas H Vickers and found that he was living with Mr & Mrs Richard Thomas from at least 1871 when he was only 2 years old, recorded as a ‘boarder’.  Presumably, they treated him like their own son, hence the obituary referring to them as Frank’s grandparents.
