His Flintshire Record of Service states that he went to France Sept 30 1916. Kicked by horse during Air Raid Dec 16, 1916. In hospital 3 months. Sent home April 1918, demobilised Jan 1919.
Joseph was born 27th February 1879 in the Overton/Penley/Cloy area to parents Richard & Elizabeth. He was baptised in Ellesmere 29th November 1866.

- 1891: aged 13, farm servant in Penley
- 1901: aged 22, waggonner at Pant Farm
- 1905: married Rose Hannah Bradshaw, June qtr, Ellesmere district
- 1911: Cumbers Bank with Rose & 3 children, working as a waggonner
- 1939: Dairy Farmer at Padeswood Hall, Buckley with Rose and son Robert J.
