
Private Albert Jeffrey Cartwright
1567 2nd Welsh Regiment
Born as Albert Jeffrey Humphries 29th October 1890 in Bronington, the son of Hester Humphreys. He was ‘adopted’ by Elias & Ann Cartwright and eventually took their surname. They lived in Bronington where Albert attended school.
1891 The Arowry, Hanmer with Elias & Ann Cartwright and another “adopted” daughter Ann Elizabeth Williams. Here his surname was still Humphreys.
1901 In Overton Road, Hanmer with Elias, Ann and another “adopted” daughter, Alice Alberts (from Whixall). His surname is still Humphries.
1911 Working as an ‘Odd Man’ for a Vicar in Hereford and now known as Albert Cartwright
According to The Glamorgan Gazette, Albert worked at the Angelton Asylum in Bridgend South Wales for a period of 2 years and then in Ogmore Vale for 18 months.
He joined the 2nd Bn Welsh Regiment in August 1914 and went to France November 1914. He was injured by shell in February 1915 after which he was in hospital and on leave for three months. During his leave, he married Priscilla Hopkin in Glamorgan on 24th April 1915. Priscilla also worked at the Angleton mental institution, as a kitchen maid.
He died in action on Sunday 26th September 1915 aged 24, only five months after marrying Priscilla.
His memorial states that he was Private 1567, the husband of P Cartwright of 189, Bridgend Rd, Aberkenfig, Bridgend, Glamorgan.
Albert is buried in Lilliers Communal Cemetery.
