He first joined the Army in June 1912 before transferring to R.F.C. in 1917 and then the RAF at the beginning of April 1918. His address on a RAF document is 7 St John’s Street, Ellesmere and his Civilian Occupation is given as Engineer.

Edward was born 25th March 1887 (school record says 1888) in Hanmer and baptised 10th April 1887 in Bronington.
The family lived at Wood Cottage, which is sometimes addressed as Bettisfield and other times as Hanmer where he attended school.
In 1901 he is working as a Cowboy in Halghton.
1911, a Wagonner in Talgarth, Breconshire. He probably met his future wife Matilda Hill during this time because they were married 18th July 1914 in the Brecknock area.

In 1939, Edward is living at 7 Brownlow Road, Ellesmere with Matilda and a son Edward.  His occupation is a Haulage Contractor.
He died in 1976 in the Oswestry registration district

Signaller 185861 William Cartwright, Wood Farm

William was born 4th February 1892 and baptised in Hanmer 20th March. Like his brother, he became a farm worker after leaving Hanmer school.
In 1939 he is living at New House, The Cumbers with inferred wife Lizzie working as an Agricultural Labourer.
He died Sept qtr 1976, but unfortunately his death report in the Whitchurch Herald does not provide more details of his life.
