Herbert Hayward, Eglwys Cross, Hanmer
2922 63rd R.N.D.

I think the initials HBH may refer to Able Bodied Herbert. His Flintshire Record of Service states that his period of service was from Jan 1916 – April 1918. He went to France Dec 1916, wounded at Paschendaele Oct 1917 and was then in hospital until he was discharged in 1918.
I believe Herbert was born and registered as Herbert T Egerton in 1897.
In 1901, he is with his mother Elizabeth Egerton and three siblings, living at Little Green, Bronington with Thomas Hayward. Elizabeth’s relationship to Thomas is recorded as ‘Mistress’.
(Thomas Hayward married Lizzie Egerton Jun qtr 1901).
After the marriage, I presume Herbert took on the surname of Hayward.
Herbert Hayward was admitted to Hanmer school May 24th 1905 and left August 14th 1905. Date of birth recorded as 8th May 1896. Address stated London Apprentice (this is in the Eglwys Cross/Tybroughton area), father Thomas. It also states that his former school was Bronington.
In 1911 the family (all known as Haywards) are still living at London Apprentice, Tybroughton. Herbert aged 13, is still recorded as a schoolboy.
In 1939, Eglwys Cross, Herbert is still with Thomas, his mother and siblings. This time DOB given as 8th May 1899! He is a Rabbit Catcher
Possible death: Dec qtr. 1964 Hawarden district
