Private R4/062564 Joseph Davies, Arrowry
A.S.C. Remounts

Soon after war was proclaimed, Joseph Davies, third son of Elizabeth & Richard Davies, joined the Army Service Corps Remounts Service. This unit was responsible for providing horses & mules to all other army units & they generally enlisted older soldiers. When Joseph signed up in Oswestry in 1915, he put his age down as 39 years 1 month – but he was actually nearer 48! However, on his discharge papers he was more honest & put his birth year down as 1866.

I am not sure exactly where Joseph was born:
1871 census says Ellesmere (though he was living in Hanmer with his parents).
1881 census says Flint (Drury?), when aged 14 he is a farm servant in Breadenheath.
1891 census says born Hanmer – he is now a farm labourer in Calverhall.
I have not found him in 1901 nor 1911, though his widowed mother is at The Arowry in Hanmer.
He followed farm pursuits throughout his life and after the war, took over the management of the family farm at The Arrowery.
He died in 1929 aged 62 and is buried at Hanmer.
