Major Sir Wyndham Charles Henry Hanmer; Remount Service Cavalry


Although there is a Flintshire Record of Service for Sir W.C.H. Hanmer, his photo does not appear in the Hanmer Remembrance Book. He served from May 1915 until March 1918, in France November 1916 to November 1917.
Born September 1867, the son of Sir Edward John Henry Hanmer and Mary Elizabeth Fosse. He married 16th April 1890 Essex Selby-Lowndes and they had four daughters and a son (see below).
he died 3rd June 1922 aged 54 and is buried in the Hanmer family plot in the churchyard.

Captain Griffin Wyndham Edward Hanmer; Shropshire Yeomanry



The following was written by Rev. Clive: His National Archives Army Officers File (WO 339/30758) states born 13 (elsewhere 30) August 1893, at Great Horwood, Nr. Winslow, Bucks. Next of kin father, resident The Mere House, Hanmer. Educated at Moorland House, Heswall, Cheshire and Wellington College, Berks. (where he served in the Officers Training Corps 2 October 1907-30 September 1908). Also educated at Agricultural College (Wye College) c1911-14. Qualified in Land Agency work. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Shropshire Yeomanry (Territorial Force) 15 January 1914.
Born 30 August 1893, son of the above Sir Wyndham Hanmer and his wife Essex Jessie Selby-Lowndes. Awarded the Territorial Force War Medal, so a pre-war Territorial. Medal Index Card states first served overseas 1916 or later as an officer of the Shropshire Yeomanry, and Royal Flying Corps. Served with no.218 Squadron RAF, equipped with De Havilland DH9 two-seater bomber biplane aircraft. On 5 July 1918 he was flying DH9 no.7421 when he engaged and drove down an enemy Albatross Scout aircraft. He is also shown on the list of Bettisfield men who served, in the old school (now Bettisfield Village Hall). Married: (1) Aileen Mary Rogerson 25 August 1921(she became an OBE and died September 1967) and had issue three daughters and a son, Sir John Wyndham Edward Hanmer, later 8th Baronet Hanmer; (2) Angela Mary Morley 23 November 1968. Justice of the Peace for Shropshire 1921. High Sheriff 1932. Became 7th Baronet Hanmer 1922. Died 1 January 1977 aged 83, and is buried in the Hanmer family plot in the churchyard.

Attended Physical & Bayonet Training courses at Newport, Mon. 1915 and Aldershot 1916. Promoted Temporary Lieutenant 18 April 1916 (London Gazette 20 June 1916). Attended course of instruction (Lewis Gun), Strensall 19 September-13 October 1916. Appointed Instructor in Physical Drill and Bayonet Fighting 9 October 1916. Temporary Captain 2/1st Shropshire Yeo. 19 October 1916 (London Gazette 10 November 1916). Attended course of instruction in explosives, Newark from 1 January 1917. Appointed Supervising Officer Physical & Bayonet Training to the 6th Cyclist Brigade, Morpeth 22 December 1916. To be Lieutenant (Tempy. Capt.) with precedence from 5 October 1915, per London Gazette 18 January 1917. Appointed Physical and Bayonet Training Supervising Officer to the Tyne Garrison, Newcastle-on-Tyne 19 April 1917, until resuming post with 6th Cyclist Bde., Acklington, Morpeth 28 July-12 November 1917. Relinquished tempy. rank of Captain 29 July 1917. Rejoined 2/1st Shropshire Yeomanry, Woodhall Camp, Acklington, Morpeth 12 November 1917.
Attached to RFC 8 December 1917. To Royal Flying Corps School of Instruction, Reading 1917. To School of Aerial Fighting & Gunnery, Maske-by-Sea 1918. Posted to 119 Squadron RFC at Duxford, Cambridgeshire 23 March 1918 [day bomber unit, flying DH4s and DH9s, but never became operational]. Captain 7 May 1918 (London Gazette 1 October 1918). 2nd Lieutenant & Hon. Lieutenant RAF 31 May 1918. To No. 4 A.S.D., RAF, France 12 June 1918. Posted to 218 Squadron RAF 27 June 1918. Overseas service 273 days. Posted to Air Ministry, London 2 March 1919 and disembodied 10 May 1919. Posted Shropshire Yeomanry, Shrewsbury as Captain (TA) 3 May 1920 but resigned commission 22 April 1921, retaining rank. Later re-appointed Temporary Lieutenant, Shropshire Yeomanry with effect from 12 April 1921 (London Gazette 3 May 1921), but released 9 June following on health grounds, and relinquished commission 10 June 1921 (London Gazette 20 September 1921).

He married twice, the first to Aileen Mary Rogerson on 25th August 1921 and after her death, he married Angela Mary Morley 23rd November 1968.
He became the 7th Baronet of Hanmer in 1922 and throughout his married life, played a very active life in the local area.
He died 1st January 1977
